PLAYER OF THE WEEKA Long Journey07:28 PM EST on Tuesday, February 19, 2008Our Athlete of the Week isn’t just designated for one person. It’s three this time, who share a common bond. Mbai Olivier, Ali Djim and his cousin, David Baroum came to America from war-torn Chad for a better life. Through the efforts of Eugene Pehoua, a native of the Central African Republic and relative of two former Hampton University basketball players (Junior and Lionel Pehoua), the three wound up in Hampton playing for Bethel. The Bruins have reaped the rewards as they sit atop the Peninsula District. The three stand 6-7, 6-8 and 6-9 respectively and all headed for college careers once their done with their lone year with the Bruins. Olivier (Clemson), Djim (Duquesne) and Baroum (LaSalle) feel they now have a second family in Hampton Roads. “This is my life here”, says Djim. All three have seen their share of pain and loss, that includes the deaths of their fathers by government forces or various rebel groups. They got the respect of their teammates. “I can’t see myself doing that”, says guard, Jontel Evans, who’s parents took all three into their home. “Going thousands of miles away, leaving your family. I couldn’t do it”. Bruins head coach, Craig Brehon had a different perspective on things. “Sometimes we take for granted of what we have in America”, he says. “These young men are relishing the moment.” Both sides also benefit from the fact that they learn not only about what basketball provides for a person on the court, but a life off of it.
