PLAYER OF THE WEEKDarrian Freeman, Cape Henry09:30 PM EST on Thursday, March 6, 2008It’s not easy being the child of a college coach when you’re in high school. Now imagine your father actually being on the bench when you’re playing. That was the case this past season for Cape Henry Collegiate guard, Darrian Freeman. His father, Dwight, was the former head coach at Norfolk State. It was a unique situation for the senior, because his father had never coached him before. “He had coached guys who went to the NBA”, he says. “When he asked me, I went why not.” The idea came from his coach, Larry Ward. “I think they have a special relationship. It’s been a pretty smooth transition”, Ward says. The result: a TCIS championship for the Dolphins and in the process, the two got the chance to spend some special time together. “When I get home I could give him good insite not only as his father, but as his coach”, says the elder Freeman. As for the son, “It was my decision. I was glad I made it.” |
