PLAYER OF THE WEEKKendra Knight, Salem High03:12 PM EDT on Tuesday, May 13, 2008
She tall, slender and very unassuming, but when Salem righthander, Kendra Knight is on the mound, she’s as imposing as they come. When you average just under 15 strikeouts a game, that tends to grab plenty of attention, and it almost didn’t happen at all. “I actually played basketball until the 8th grade and some AAU ball”, she says. “So it was pretty close.” That became the Sun Devils gain in softball. The now University of Maryland-bound pitcher is poised at getting an elusive state title for the Salem. Knight has 7 no-hitters in her career along with a perfect game. Head Coach, Jason Barefoot knows he’s doesn’t need to tinkering with anything Knight does in her routine. “Being her high school coach the past three years, she’s got her pitching coach that she works with. I put her with her catcher, and tell her whatever you’re doing, keep doing it”, he says. Sound and simple advice for a pitcher who’s as dominating as they come in the state. |
