Brittney Griner (GRY'-ner), at 6-foot-8, has a rim-rattling, backboard shaking, two-handed slam. Griner, who signed with Baylor, is the top player in the country according to Rivals.com and ESPN's HoopGurlz. Click below for a look at this week's rankings.01/30/2009Farney to retire Dr. Bill Farney, University Interscholastic League (UIL) executive director, will retire on Jan. 30, following 31 years of service. Dr. Farney has been UIL executive director since 1995, and was UIL assistant director and athletic director prior to that. But UIL had been part of Farney's life long before he began working for the university. He first competed in UIL's Declamation competition as an elementary school student and as a coach and principal worked to increase the number of girls' athletic programs. He was instrumental in getting girls' track added to UIL sports. The 6-foot-4, 205-pound Gilbert has been around football his entire life. When he was just 3, his father, Gale, became the only player in history to be a member of five consecutive Super Bowl teams (the Buffalo Bills, 1991-94, and the San Diego Chargers, 1995). Now Garrett is making his own mark. “I wanted to be like my father—a quarterback,” says Gilbert. “It was natural to me. Garrett Gilbert threw for five touchdowns, ran for two more and set a Texas passing record in leading Lake Travis past Longview, 48-23, in the Class 4A Division I state championship game Saturday. Gilbert completed 26 of 37 passes for 356 yards to finish his high school career with 12,534 yards, surpassing by two yards current Texas Tech quarterback Graham Harrell, who threw for 12,532 yards from 2000-03 at Ennis High School. The Cavaliers were down early but a 102 yard kickoff return turned things around. They also had two rushing touchdowns by Quarterback Garrett Gilbert. Lake Travis will play Killeen or Gregory-Portland in the next round. Giddings had a close game with Rio Hondo until they stopped the Bobcats on a 4th and one from the one and then drove 99 yards in three plays to take command of the game, winning 42-28.
