TOP STORIESValley kids having fun at DreamCatcher Park in Surprise09:00 PM MST on Tuesday, November 27, 2007“There are three rules, everybody bats, everybody gets on base and everybody scores,” said City of Surprise Recreation Manager Paul Frie. For two nights a week, you can catch these kids ages 5 to 21 playing a game of baseball at the DreamCatcher Park in Surprise. “It’s designed for cognitively and physical challenged individuals to play the game of baseball in its purest form,” Frie said. Frie said the Bambino Buddy Ball Miracle League was started last March. There are more than 70 leagues like it across the country.
“She’s so excited,” said parent Marlene Heckman. “It’s a goal, it’s a purpose, and it’s the social aspect of it, the fun of it and everyone that is involved in it.” “It’s kind of broadened our family,” said parent Judy Dunn. Heckman and Dunn can't say enough of what this league has done for her their two daughters, Jackie and Sam. Not only are the girls, who go to Willow Canyon High School, improving they're skills on the baseball field, but the league is also a support system for the parents. “As a parent, it’s really good because your around everybody with the same needs you have and that’s really what I like about it,” Dunn said. The support system also includes buddies who help out with the league. “We have 61 buddies registered right now, who help with swinging the bat, running the bases, throwing the ball, whatever it may be,” Frie said. As for the kids, it’s about having fun and learning a new trick or two on the field. “Hanging out with my friends and getting involved in this game because I like it,” said Sam, Bambino Buddy Ball Miracle League player. “A lot of times what people think about this are it’s a sympathy thing, and they’re going to come out and feel sorry for the kids,” Frie said. “They don’t want that. They just want to have fun and play. And so the more people who can come out as a buddy or help out with coaching, whatever it might be, the better.” |
