TOP STORIESSoccer player scoring big in the classroom07:52 PM MST on Tuesday, January 15, 2008"I went to club soccer when I was 10-years-old and that’s when I guess it all started getting serious for me,” said Chandler High School soccer player Sean Morehouse. The Chandler high senior’s decision to take his soccer playing to the next level has made him one of the top players on the school’s boys varsity soccer team. As a matter of fact, Morehouse’s skills have helped lead the Wolves from the bottom of the barrel his freshman year, to one of the top teams in the state. “We were three and 14 and this year we had three wins in our first five games, “ Morehouse said. “So it’s really amazing to play on a good team.” Small guy, 5-foot-4, 5-foot-5, 100 pounds if he was wet and wearing boots,” said the boys varsity coach Jason Green. “And now he’s really grown and really worked hard in the weight room and developed as a player on and off the field.”
Green took over the school's soccer program during Morehouse’s freshman season. He’s not only excited on where his team is headed this season, but it's what they do in the classroom that's getting them recognized. With a 4.6 GPA, ranking him sixth in his senior class, Morehouse has been awarded an academic All-American from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. “I always knew that I was good academically, but I never thought of getting an award that was this prestigious,” Morehouse said. Morehouse isn't the only one getting recognized. His team has earned it's third straight national team academic award from the association for having a team GPA of 3.25 or better. “We excel in the classroom and we excel in the field,” Green said. With the season coming to close next month, Morehouse and his team have they're eyes set on a state title. But no matter what happens, Green hopes his team learns a thing or two about life. “Hopefully, some of the things we teach throughout the way you know isn’t just soccer,” Green said. “Hopefully, we teach them a little about life and how to be better people.”
