TOP STORIESFemale athletes getting an upper hand on and off the field02:36 PM MST on Friday, February 1, 2008Being a high school athlete takes a lot of hard work. Not only are these students trying to be the best at their sport, but some even go to greater lengths like adding a trainer or a nutritionist to their training program. Well there’s another element being added into that mix and it’s called Chic’z On the Go. It’s a company based in Walnut Creek, Calif., that makes survival kits for female athletes. “We bought a business book for dummies, that’s how we started this company,” said Chic’z On the Go owner Diane Blake. Blake and a business partner started the company more than two years ago. They offer all kinds of survival kits for sports like soccer, basketball, volleyball and lacrosse. “You’re going to get sunscreen and lip balm, sanitizer, pre-wrap for hair, a brush with mirror, tissues, Band-Aids, quench gum, a little water proof pouch for jewelry or phone, hair bands and deodorant.,” Blake said. Blake, who bought out her partner a couple months ago, runs the company out of her home. “I have a third stall garage, and I keep the inventory in there,” Blake said. Blake’s three kids, twins Page and Tommy 10, and Hannah 12, give mom a helping hand when it comes to the business. They not only help package the products, they pick them out and test them.
3TV “We tried to put really fun products in it,” Blake said. Blake, who left the corporate world 12 years ago to raise her kids, never expected she would be running her own company. “I never saw this coming,” Blake said. Blake’s goal is for sports teams across the country to purchase her items. So, far her business has mostly been by word of mouth in her local area. “I would love to move out of my home and get a storage unit,” Blake said. While that is one thing she has her eyes set on for the future, she’s launching some new kits for cheer and gymnastics. Blake is also all about customizing kits for teams and even helps them fundraise. “For example, the team will be assigned a code, usually their team name,” Blake said. “When ordering online they will use this code in the coupon code box. This lets me track all their sales. At the end of a designated period, I will cut the team a check for 10 percent of the total of net sales. If you’re interested in finding out how you can order these products for your girls’ teams, please go to Blake’s Web site.
