The boys at Pinnacle High School run through an afternoon practice like a well-oiled machine. The Pioneers are a nice mixture of veterans and youth. It's a team unlike the one that reached last season's state semifinals.

Former Valley athlete helping mom battle cancer
While his Northwestern teammates tipped off their basketball season, sophomore Kevin Coble was playing hoops in a Scottsdale gym. He left the team to be with his mother, Carlys, as she battles Stage 2 breast cancer.

Red Mountain tramples Basha
The Mesa Red Mountain Mountain Lions ran like cheetahs through the Chandler Basha defense, gaining 314 yards on 62 carries en route to a 21-0 win in the second round of the Class 5A-I playoffs Friday night at Red Mountain.

Valley girl making a name for herself in the luge world
Sierra Ullrich is your typical teenager. This 13-year-old is not only a good student, but she loves skateboarding. But Ullrich, who will be a freshman at Desert Vista High School, next year, has picked up another sport. She is a part of United States Luge Association Junior Development Team.

Red Mountain bounces back with big win
After a disappointing loss to Mesa last week, Mesa Red Mountain needed to make a statement in the opening round of the 5A-I playoffs. The Mountain Lions did just that, cruising to a 28-0 win over Phoenix North Canyon.

Desert Ridge D sparks team’s 1st playoff win
Mesa Desert Ridge has been defined by its offense all season. Its defense provided the big plays that lifted the Jaguars to victory Friday in the first round of the 5A Division II state football playoffs.

Queen Creek picks off Palo Verde
Queen Creek’s Austin Carnes had three interceptions, one of which led to a 33-yard touchdown, as the Bulldogs overcame a rough offensive night to defeat visiting Tucson Palo Verde 29-21 in the first round of the 4A-II state football playoffs.

Eloy's secret weapon--Pat Cann
The only stop light in the small town of Eloy is at the railroad crossing. The trains rumble through this southern Arizona town 24-7. But there's a new rumble that's being felt here on Friday nights and it comes from the football field two blocks behind the town hall.
