SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- Two Spartanburg lawmakers want to require officials to use television replays to resolve close plays at high school football and basketball playoff games after their hometown high school had a potential game-winning shot disallowed at a state title game last week. Rep. Harold Mitchell told the Herald-Journal of Spartanburg he decided to file the bill Tuesday after Spartanburg High lost Friday's 4A boys' state title game to Summerville High 50-48. Spartanburg's Zycorrian Robinson hit a three-quarters court shot at the buzzer that would have won the game, but the referees waived it off after huddling for a minute. They did not review a TV replay. "Those kids played their hearts out only to have human error steal it away from them," said Mitchell, D-Spartanburg. "We want to make sure neither our high school, nor any other high school has to go through anything like this again." House Speaker Pro Tem Doug Smith, a Spartanburg Republican, also sponsored the bill, which would require the South Carolina High School League to use replay in football and basketball playoff games. High School League Executive Director Jerome Singleton said the state organization follows national high school rules that do not allow referees to check replays. Rep. Mike Anthony, a former football coach at Union High, said he would support the bill if replay was limited to state championship games, which are usually played at college sites that have the technology in place. The Union Democrat said he thinks replays would have shown Robinson released his shot before the buzzer. |
