SPARTANBURG, S.C. -- South Carolina scored three touchdowns in the second half to defeat North Carolina 24-16 in the 72nd annual Shrine Bowl of the Carolinas.

South Carolina trailed 16-3 at halftime but scored the only points in the second.

In the third quarter, Dorman's Walter Canty scored on a 9-yard run to cap a four-play, 80-yard drive. He was named South Carolina's defensive MVP, with four tackles, including two for a loss. He returned four punts for 55 yards, plus fared well on offense, gaining 63 yards rushing on four carries.

"The blocking was outstanding today," Canty said. "It made it easier for me to find the holes. It was fun to run the ball. I'm happy that I scored a touchdown, but what makes me feel even better is that we won."

In the fourth quarter, Northwestern's Jarrett Neely scored on a 14 yard run. And Jerrodd Williams of Daniel High School scored by returning an interception 59 yards.

South Carolina's defense allowed North Carolina only 120 yards in total offense -- just 17 yards in the second half.

"I don't think we did anything different in the second half," Canty said. "We just made a couple of mistakes in the first half.  We corrected them."

The two quarterbacks were named offensive MVPs. Stephon Gilmore of South Pointe in South Carolina tallied 99 yards, including 71 on the ground. Desmond Lowery of South Point in North Carolina scored on a 54-yard run.

South Mecklenburg linebacker Spencer Shuey was the North Carolina defensive MVP with eight tackles, including two for a loss.

South Carolina leads the series 40-28 with four ties.
