ATHLETES OF THE WEEKSportsDay's girls track and field athlete of the week: Lancaster's Ashley Starks01:54 AM CDT on Thursday, April 10, 2008
Ashley Starks
LANCASTER, SR.
What she did: At the Texas Relays, Starks was part of two winning relays for Lancaster, which was named the most outstanding high school team of the meet. She was part of the 4x100 (46.53) and 4x200 (1:38.83). She was also second in the 100 hurdles (14.91). She said it: On picking up track after the Lancaster basketball team's deep playoff run: "I was out longer than they were because they were training way before I was. When I came out, I didn't think I was where I should be, but now I think I'm slowly getting there." Did you know? Starks' parents, Penny and Sterling Starks, ran track at Oklahoma State, but she signed a track scholarship with Texas. She said deciding on Texas was easy for her, "but for them, no."... Starks was the 2007 SportsDay girls track athlete of the year as part of a Lancaster team that won its seventh consecutive 4A state title. Bobbi Roquemore
