ATHLETES OF THE WEEKSportsDay's girls track and field athlete of the week: Mesquite Horn's Olivia Amy09:53 PM CDT on Wednesday, April 30, 2008
Olivia Amy
MESQUITE HORN What she did: Amy, a junior, reached state for the first time by winning the 100 hurdles (14.91) and placing second in the 300 hurdles (43.32) Saturday at the 5A Region II meet at Baylor. She said it: "I've been cracking down on conditioning, really going at it, and conditioning myself for a longer race." Coach said it: "She is always talking about who she wants to run against because she wants to beat the best hurdlers. She does not like to run against mediocre hurdlers and win. She wants to beat the best." – Ashley Peach Did you know? Amy was disappointed in her winning time in the 100 hurdles, but turned around and completed the 300 hurdles in a personal-best 43.32, good for second place. ... Her biggest influences are her mother, Anita Jacob, and Mesquite Flames track club coach Donovan Plummer, who introduced her to the hurdles as a fourth-grader. ... Favorite music is reggae because of "the beats and the rhythm," she said.
