Winning the battle Logan Runde was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia when he was 5, and he underwent nearly three years of chemotherapy. But Runde's leukemia is in remission, and this season the sophomore right wing has led Colleyville Heritage to a 10-0-3 start. Runde has eight goals and 11 assists and is tied for 11th in the Silver Division with 19 points. He has at least one point in nine of his 12 games, and he scored four goals against Grand Prairie/DeSoto on Oct. 11. "I'm just trying to keep a positive attitude and play my heart out," Runde said.
Quick impact Rendon Long is only a freshman, but the Keller left wing is tied for the Gold Division lead in goals (11) and is tied for second in the division in points (21). Long has at least one point in 11 of Keller's 14 games, and Keller (7-6-1) has already matched its win total from last season, when it was 7-17-0. Long is in his second year of being home-schooled. He said he plans to attend a high school next school year. "I like playing hockey because it lets me interact with other people," Long said. "It's good to have a team of all my friends that can help me out with anything."

GOLD DIVISION Flower Mound vs. Plano West (9:30 p.m. today, Farmers Branch): Both teams reached the state tournament last season, with Plano West finishing second and Flower Mound taking third.
SILVER DIVISION Frisco vs. Richardson (9:30 p.m. today, Plano): Richardson leads the Silver Division in scoring with an average of six goals per game. Frisco has won eight of its last nine games.
PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Michael Crow, Highland Park What he did: The senior center scored two goals – one of them short-handed – in last Thursday's 3-2 shootout win over Plano West, last season's state runner-up. Highland Park is 9-3-1 and has already surpassed its win total from last season, when it was 7-14-3. Season stats: Crow is tied for second in the Gold Division in points (21) and is tied for third in goals (10) and assists (11). He said it: "We haven't beaten Plano West varsity for a good number of years. It was a big win for us." Did you know? Michael Haake, Keller: The senior leads the Gold Division with 22 points – 13 more than he had all of last season – and also leads the division with 14 assists. Will Leedy, Jesuit: Had two goals and two assists to help Jesuit extend its winning streak to five with a 6-2 victory over Southlake Carroll last Thursday. Zach Nuss, Mansfield: Had two goals and an assist in a 3-2 win over Flower Mound Marcus last Thursday. He scored the game-winning goal in the third period. Taylor Stobaugh, Plano East: Made 30 saves in a 5-2 win over Coppell last Thursday.
SILVER DIVISION Alex Gemsheim, Plano: Made 27 saves in a 3-0 win over Bishop Lynch last Thursday. Hunter Herd, Arlington Martin: Had a goal and an assist in regulation, then had the winning score in a shootout as Martin beat Colleyville Heritage, 5-4, last Thursday. Martin (12-1-0) extended its winning streak to six and moved into first place in the Silver Division. Sean Hickey, Birdville: Has scored 13 goals during Birdville's seven-game winning streak. Hickey leads the Silver Division in goals (20) and is tied for the lead in points (32). Preston Martinez, Richardson: Had two goals and two assists in a 7-4 win over Garland last Thursday. Dakota Stieber, Plano West: Had three goals and an assist in a 4-2 win over Rockwall last Thursday. |
