TOP STORIESDespite lofty record, Plano West wants more01:27 AM CST on Thursday, January 24, 2008PLANO – The Plano West boys are 21-5, ranked No. 4 in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches' Class 5A state poll and reeled off their sixth straight District 9-5A victory Tuesday, stomping Richardson, 67-38. That should give second-year coach Anthony Morgan cause to praise his team. Instead, he reminds the players of all they haven't accomplished. "We haven't done anything yet," he said. For proof, Morgan need only show his players the writing on the wall. Bunches of banners earned by the girls team adorn the gymnasium walls at Plano West. One honors the 2005-06 state champions. The boys team has just two banners – one for a 2002 district title, the other for being area finalists in 2005. Junior guard Tyler Melville said the goal is to add more. "We look forward to the challenge of trying to make history," Melville said. "We have a nonstop work ethic. Our goal is to make it to state." Even after Tuesday's big win, Morgan found issues to address in a lengthy team meeting in the locker room. Plano West came out strong behind a barrage of 3-pointers and the slashing of sophomore Bakari Turner, taking a 20-6 lead through one quarter. After that, Morgan said, his team coasted. The second quarter was even, with each team scoring 18 points, and Plano West led 38-24 at halftime. In five previous games, Plano West won by an average of seven points and had just one double-digit win. The Wolves have wins of 60-55 over Plano, 52-47 over Wylie and 67-64 over Richardson Berkner. "We've got to be much better late in the season to continue on," Morgan said. "We haven't handled anyone. We've played a lot of close games. We're beatable." Don't get Morgan wrong. He's happy with some of the building blocks he's put into place. He sees a program headed in the right direction. Morgan has established a winning mentality by going deep into his bench and stressing work ethic and hustle. When you're using 11 to 12 players a night, one who isn't giving his best probably will find his way to the bench. That's why no individual play stood out Tuesday like the one Wilson Neely made to end the first quarter. The senior chased down an outlet pass from Jackson Jeffcoat and saved the ball as he was going out of bounds, passing off to Turner, who made an easy layup at the buzzer for a 20-6 lead. Players say Morgan, who played football at UTEP, makes them push themselves. Neely's play illustrated that. "It's hard work, hard work, hard work," Turner said. "He has always stressed coming together as a team." Plano West puts its district lead on the line Friday when it visits second-place Plano East. Each of the teams' two meetings this season ended badly for Plano West. It had a 15-point halftime lead at the Garland Coca-Cola Classic and lost, 67-63. Then it had an eight-point lead through three quarters at home Dec. 21 and lost, 56-54. "We've been happy to be up and let them make a run at us," Morgan said. "They've hit the shots down the stretch." Plano West (21-5, 7-1 9-5A) at Plano East (20-6, 6-2), 7:30 p.m. Friday
