Smalls said Thursday that he has committed to Virginia, picking the Cavaliers over ACC rival Wake Forest, which recruited the Plano East senior as a safety. Playing quarterback wasn't the only reason Smalls went with Virginia. "It's a very highly respected school, the top public university in the country. It's hard to say no to a school like that." Smalls (6-0, 183) is ranked No. 82 on SportsDay's Area Top 100. SMU adds three local commitments: Richland linebacker Victor Jones said he wanted to stay "close to home," and that's why he committed to SMU. Jones (6-1, 219), No. 61 on the Area Top 100, originally committed to Oklahoma State before a scholarship offer was pulled. SMU also picked up commitments from North Garland offensive lineman Jimmy Chase (6-3, 260) and Prosper tight end Taylor Thompson (6-7, 224), who switched from Vanderbilt. Briefly: Kimball linebacker Chris Gipson (5-11, 238), No. 84 on the Area Top 100, said he committed to Colorado State. ...
