Austin or bust
Area teams with the best chances of reaching state: Frisco (4A): Playoff experience abounds for a team that lost to eventual state champ Lincoln, 47-46, in the regional semifinals last season. Mansfield Summit (5A): Key factor will be guard play and whether a lack of competition in District 4-5A will hurt. Mansfield Timberview (4A): No. 1 in state poll for good reason. Team has no real weakness. Roosevelt (3A): Has not lost to a 3A team this season and has been more than competitive against 4A and 5A teams.
Turnaround teams
After cold start, teams getting it together: Flower Mound Marcus: Lost eight of 10 in season's first month but recovered to win 6-5A title. Duncanville: District 7-5A champ lost 10 of first 22; now riding 10-game winning streak. Rockwall: Lost seven of 10 early but breezed to District 10-4A championship. Seagoville: Dropped six of first nine games but rallied to share 11-4A title with Carter.
Franchise players
Kelsi Baker, Mesquite Horn: The 6-1 senior is capable of taking over a game, as she did when she scored 36 points in a 66-59 win over DeSoto in the final regular-season game. Starr Crawford, Mansfield Summit: At 6-0, the senior TCU signee can dominate on the inside with surprising quickness. Keuna Flax, Haltom: The 5-9 senior Oklahoma State signee leads area 5A players in scoring (21.4 ppg.) Tiffany Moore, Frisco: The 5-10 junior guard shoots 48 percent from the field and averages 7.8 assists, 9.6 rebounds and 4.1 steals per game. Odyssey Sims, Irving MacArthur: The 5-8 junior left-hander, who backed off her commitment to Baylor last fall, is rated the No. 9 prospect nationally in the 2010 graduating class by ESPNU.
Double trouble
Not only can these players score, they also rule the boards: Keyara Criner, Samuell: The 5-11 senior supplements her area-best 17.2 rebound average with an 18-point scoring average. Alexis Kelley, Skyline: The 6-1 junior averages 12.8 points and 10.4 rebounds for the 9-5A champion. Shauntal Nobles, Justin Northwest: The 6-1 Texas Tech signee is leading area 5A players in rebounding (11.7) and is fourth in scoring (19.0.) Sara Stanley, Wylie: The 5-11 senior averages 16.6 points and 10.9 rebounds.
Best behind the arc
Top 3-point shooters: Peyton Adamson, Rockwall: The 5-7 junior leads 4A and the area with 112 3-pointers. Alexa Hardick, Bishop Lynch: TAPPS area leader with 107 3-pointers in regular season. Krystle Henderson, Skyline: The 5-5 junior leads area 5A players with 77 3-pointers.
One-two combinations
Teams that feature two star players at similar positions: Roosevelt: Opponents must pick their scoring poison: Trudy Armstead (19.7) or Nicole Peavy (18.4.) Colleyville Heritage: Guards Alexia Standish and Carley Russell each have made 53 3-pointers. Garland Naaman Forest: Senior posts Alisha Allen and Jasmine Godbolt average 12.5 and 12.3 points, respectively. Godbolt leads in rebounding (7.9-6.0.) Mansfield Timberview: Junior 5-9 guards Maegan Conwright and Keena Mays are 1-2 in team scoring, assists and 3-pointers.
Best first-round matchups
5A: Grapevine (27-6) vs. Hebron (24-8) 4A: West Mesquite (23-7) vs. Waxahachie (22-11)
Back to back?
Teams trying to repeat as state champions: Argyle Liberty Christian: TAPPS 5A winner in '08. Bishop Lynch: TAPPS 6A power seeks 18th state title in last 19 years. Lincoln: 4A power gets a boost from the return of senior Kimetria Hayden, who'd missed the season with an injury.
Dark horses
Arlington Seguin: Shared ultra-competitive 8-4A title with Mansfield Timberview. DeSoto: Supposed rebuilding year for last season's 5A state finalist, but somebody forgot to tell junior guard Kelli Willingham and teammates. Garland Naaman Forest: Lots of experience returns for team that made it to state tournament last year. Irving MacArthur: Weathered midseason slump; leads area with 71.0 scoring average.
Floor generals
Chynna Brown, Lincoln: The senior was at the controls in her team's '08 run to the state title. J'Tierra Brown, West Mesquite: In part because of her ball distribution, West Mesquite sports one of the area's most balanced attacks. Shay Cooney-Williams, Frisco: Pepperdine signee averages 6.5 assists. BreAnna Dawkins, Cedar Hill: The 5-7 junior runs things for coach Andrea Robinson.
