TOP STORIESMansfield ISD remains power in girls basketball01:12 AM CDT on Monday, March 9, 2009The Mansfield ISD's reputation for excellence in girls basketball was reinforced with Mansfield Summit's 52-43 victory over Houston Nimitz in the UIL Class 5A state championship game Saturday night at the Frank Erwin Center. Summit's title was the first in the school's seven-year existence, but the fifth for the school district in the last 11 years. Summit (34-4) graduates two starters, guard Alisha Filmore and forward Starr Crawford, the game's MVP. "More than stats, we'll miss the leadership from those two," Summit coach Tammy Lusinger said. "We have big shoes to fill, but we had a couple of kids that stepped up in the playoffs." Two of Summit's returning starters, forward Amy Moody and guard Taylor Hooker, joined Crawford on the 5A all-tournament team. Summit's tallest player, 6-2 junior center Loren McDaniel, also returns. "We won't change the kind of team we are," Lusinger said. "We'll still rely heavily on rebounding and defense to create our offense." Mansfield Timberview (35-4), which lost in the 4A championship game to Waco Midway, 50-27, returns starting guards Maegan Conwright and Keena Mays. Mays was named to the 4A all-tournament team along with senior teammate Chanice Smith. Another key returnee is 6-4 center Camille Redmon. Argyle (20-15), beaten in the 3A state title game by Robinson, 49-33, loses only two seniors. Returning starters are center Brittany O'Brien, guard Colbea Harris and forward Claire Pettibon, who was named to the 3A all-tournament team. |
