TOP STORIESCoppell shuts out Flower Mound, 4-011:53 PM CDT on Friday, March 28, 2008FLOWER MOUND – When a Coppell base runner was picked off first base Friday night, the Flower Mound fans cheered. They probably cheered a little louder because the runner was former Flower Mound student Jacob Morris. The night was chilly and so was the reception for Morris, a junior who was making his varsity debut for Coppell. The outfielder was ineligible for one calendar year because District 6-5A officials, and the UIL State Executive Committee, ruled last year that he transferred for athletic purposes. Fans who saw Morris' return also saw Coppell win, 4-0, by capitalizing on errors in a game dominated by pitchers. Zak Hermans allowed three hits and struck out six in five innings for Coppell (19-3, 6-0), and Brandon Parrent allowed only three hits and struck out nine in six innings for Flower Mound (7-7, 4-2). Parrent didn't allow an earned run and struck out six of eight batters during one stretch, but three Flower Mound errors led to him taking the loss. Morris, Flower Mound's former starting quarterback and one of the top baseball prospects in the Class of 2009, started in center field for Coppell. He was 0-for-2 with a walk. "Afterward, I told him, 'Aren't we glad that's over?'" Coppell coach Don English said. "It was an unjust penalty, I think, making a kid sit out an entire calendar year. But he handled it like a champ." |
