Denton Guyer ends Denton Ryan's streak DENTON – Layne Greenlee and Amanda Wells homered to help Denton Guyer's softball team gain sole possession of first place in District 5-4A with a 7-5 win over Denton Ryan on Tuesday. Guyer (21-6, 7-0) beat Ryan (18-9, 6-1) for the first time ever and ended Ryan's 30-game district winning streak. It was the 200th win for Guyer coach Keith Medford in his 11-year career. "I don't know if we focused a whole lot on beating Ryan," Medford said. "They're a team in our district we're trying to get past." BASEBALL Sam Arrieta, Plano East: Pitched a four-hitter to lead Plano East to a 3-1 win over defending 5A state champion Plano West (11-6, 3-2 District 8-5A). Cameron Brewer, Garland Lakeview: Pitched a five-hitter and struck out 11 as Garland Lakeview (12-3-1, 4-0) gained sole possession of first place in District 10-5A with a 2-1 win over Sachse. Ryan Downs, Dallas Christian: Was 4-for-4 with six RBIs and was a triple short of hitting for the cycle in a 16-4 win over Tyler Grace. He also pitched a complete game. Daniel Green, Mansfield: Was 3-for-4 and hit a game-winning, two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th inning to give Mansfield a 3-2 win over Arlington Martin. Erin McCarver, Hebron: Was 2-for-3 with a double, a home run and three RBIs in a 5-2 win over Southlake Carroll, last year's 5A state runner-up.
SOFTBALL Teri Lyles, Keller: Came within two outs of a perfect game and finished with a one-hitter and 13 strikeouts as Keller (23-2-1, 8-0 District 5-5A), the state's fifth-ranked 5A team, beat Euless Trinity, 6-0. Lyles (17-0-1) also hit a three-run triple. Kristen Miles, Plano: The freshman was 3-for-4 and scored a run to help Plano (14-9-1, 2-1) to a 3-1 win over Wylie, which entered the game tied for first in 8-5A. Taylor Schoblocher, Forney: Was 2-for-2 with a home run and four RBIs as the state's 16th-ranked 4A team beat Red Oak, 14-2, and improved to 6-0 in District 15-4A. Kim Spivey, Hillcrest: Pitched a no-hitter and struck out nine to lead Hillcrest (9-1, 4-0 District 12-4A) to a 15-0, three-inning win over Samuell. Brittany Talley, Little Elm: Pitched a no-hitter and struck out 12 as Little Elm (23-3, 5-2 District 5-4A) beat Denton, 11-0, in five innings. Talley also went 2-for-3 with two RBIs.
College watch BASEBALL Colton Cain, Waxahachie: The Texas signee pitched a two-hit shutout and struck out 17 to lead Waxahachie (13-4, 5-0 District 16-4A) to a 9-0 win over Cleburne. Cain also went 2-for-4 with two home runs and four RBIs.
Ranked teams fall A couple of area-ranked softball teams fell as Coppell (No. 5 in 5A) lost 6-4 to No. 9 Flower Mound Marcus and Frisco Wakeland (No. 9 in 4A-others) lost 3-2 to McKinney North.
Lake Highlands softball Last season, Lake Highlands was 9-21 overall and 2-12 in district play. But after freshman Erin Brennan pitched a complete game and went 2-for-3 to pace a 5-3 win over Molina, Lake Highlands is 14-5 overall and 7-0 in 9-5A.
Kylie Roos, Celina softball The Northwestern State signee pitched a no-hitter and struck out 13 to lead Celina (21-4, 5-0 District 9-3A), the state's 10th-ranked 3A team, to a 9-0 win over Argyle. Roos also went 2-for-4 with a double and three RBIs.
12 Strikeouts for South Grand Prairie softball pitcher Elizabeth Young in a 2-1 win over Irving Nimitz, the state's 22nd-ranked 5A team.
6-0 Record for Rockwall baseball pitcher Travis Ballew after he struck out 10 and earned the win in Tuesday's 4-3 victory over Highland Park.
5 RBIs for Richardson Berkner's Stephen Spurlin in a 13-0 victory over Sunset. |
