Plano gains share of first in softball Freshman Mackenzie Velasquez and sophomore Taylor Jensen each went 2-for-3 with an RBI to lead the Plano softball team to a 5-1 win over Plano West on Friday. Plano (15-9-1, 3-1) and Plano West (15-8, 3-1) are now tied for first place with Wylie in District 8-5A. Plano West is No. 4 in SportsDay's 5A area rankings, and Plano is No. 8. Macy Burr added two hits for Plano, and Abbi Frakes pitched a complete game. Plano scored twice in the bottom of the third to take a 3-1 lead, then added two runs in the sixth.
BASEBALL
Robert Bissell, Bryan Adams: Pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine as Bryan Adams (11-3, 6-0 District 12-4A) beat Conrad, 12-0. Lance Fairchild, Rowlett: Allowed four hits in 61/3 innings to earn the win and lead Rowlett (14-4, 4-1) to a 3-0 victory over Garland Lakeview, which entered the game in first place in 10-5A. Chris Galvan, Pinkston: Was 4-for-5 with a double, two triples and four RBIs in an 18-5 win over South Oak Cliff. Greg McCall, Frisco Wakeland: Was 3-for-3 with a home run and five RBIs as Wakeland (13-4, 5-2 District 9-4A) beat McKinney North, 9-2. Ross McCarty, Denton Ryan: Was 2-for-2 with a home run and two RBIs as Ryan (13-4, 7-0) gained sole possession of first in District 5-4A with a 4-2 win over Denton Guyer.
SOFTBALL Heather Duckworth, North Mesquite: Was 3-for-3 with a single, double, triple and five RBIs in a 13-3 win over Tyler John Tyler. Jessica Gonzales, Arlington Lamar: Was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and four RBIs in a 9-2 win over Arlington Sam Houston. Krystal Ruth, Wylie: Pitched a two-hit shutout as Wylie (17-6, 3-1 District 8-5A) beat Plano East, 3-0. Brittany Talley, Little Elm: Talley, who has committed to Arkansas, struck out 14 in a 5-1 win over Lake Dallas. That came after Talley pitched a no-hitter and struck out 12 against Denton on Tuesday. Eli Torres, Mansfield Summit: Pitched a three-hitter and struck out nine in a 2-1 win over Mansfield as Summit gained sole possession of first place in District 4-5A.
College watch SOFTBALL Kallan Thompson, Forney: The Louisiana Tech signee was 2-for-2 with a double and two RBIs as Forney (22-6, 7-0 District 15-4A), the state's 16th-ranked 4A team, beat No. 17 Mesquite Poteet, 6-2. Thompson was starting for the first time this season after recovering from a thumb injury.
The hero again On Tuesday, Daniel Green hit a game-winning, two-run home run in the bottom of the 10th to give Mansfield a 3-2 win over Arlington Martin. On Friday, Green hit a game-winning, three-run home run in the bottom of the seventh as Mansfield (14-5, 5-0 District 4-5A) beat Arlington Lamar, 8-5.
Plano baseball A year ago, Plano finished sixth in its district. This season, Plano (12-4-1, 4-1) is in first place in District 8-5A and has beaten defending 5A state champion Plano West. Plano hosts Sachse today in a nondistrict game.
Zach Lee, McKinney baseball Lee, one of the state's top quarterback recruits in the Class of 2010, pitched a no-hitter in an 11-0, five-inning win over Frisco Liberty. Lee also homered as McKinney (11-6, 6-1) gained sole possession of first in 9-4A.
5 RBIs for Frisco Centennial's Ryan Mossakowski in a 10-5 win over Frisco in baseball. Mossakowski, a standout quarterback, has signed to play football for Kentucky.
200 Wins for softball coach Timothy Taylor at Molina after a 5-4 win vs. Richardson Berkner.
10 Strikeouts for Colleyville Heritage's Aaron Gilbreath in a 5-1 win vs. Keller, the No. 2 team in SportsDay's 5A area baseball rankings. |
