TOP STORIESSkyline girls sprint to relay titles12:48 AM CDT on Sunday, April 5, 2009AUSTIN – Skyline's Tiffany Hines took off her shoe and found a hole in the pink and blue sock on her right foot. Whether or not she got that hole because of her efforts in relay competition is still a mystery. Hines and teammates Candace Jackson, Alishia Perkins and Kearra Haynes gave Skyline victories in the Division II 4x100 and 4x200 relays at the 82nd Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays on Saturday. The quartet won the 4x100 in 46.06 seconds, which ranks No. 1 in the nation according to TrackAndFieldNews.com. The best race of the day arguably was Skyline's 4x200 victory. Hines, the anchor, overcame a bad handoff and made up a 10-yard deficit to give Skyline the gold medal in 1:37.22 seconds, edging Serra, Calif., by eight-hundredths of a second. "I was really anxious seeing how close the race was. I just got out a little too fast," Hines said of the handoff. "But I always think the best. I don't doubt myself." "I felt like she would get the job done," said Jackson, a Texas Tech signee and the team's third leg. "When I gave her the stick, I had faith because I knew my teammate could do it." Goodwin wins 3 out of 5: Rowlett's Marquise Goodwin, a Texas signee, didn't win all five of the events he entered, but he took home three gold and two silver medals. Goodwin won the triple jump (49 feet, 10½ inches) and teamed with Hilbert Jackson, Carl Perrymon and Kyle Clemons to win the 4x200 in 1:26.04. Goodwin won the long jump on Friday. Goodwin placed second in the 100 (10.48). The quartet that ran the 4x200 took second in the 4x100 in 41.05, finishing behind Spring Westfield (40.86). Whitesboro thrower shines: Whitesboro thrower Hayden Baillio isn't quite on Michael Carter's level, but on Saturday, he became the closest to Carter that the state has seen in a while. Baillio not only set the Mike A. Myers Stadium record but also recorded the nation's best throw in the shot put of 72 feet, 2¼ inches. Baillio, a Texas signee, threw 70 feet three times in Saturday's six-throw event. "I've never even hit that in practice," Baillio said, "but the adrenaline here and the atmosphere is amazing. To be mentioned with Michael Carter, I can't put it into words. It's awesome." Baillio, who set a meet record in the discus on Friday, missed the shot put meet record of 74-7½, set by Carter in 1979. Carter also threw a national record 81-3½ that year. Briefly: Greenhill's Chelsey Sveinsson dominated the girls 1,600, winning in 4:46.47, the nation's fastest time according to TrackAndFieldNews.com. Sveinsson, who won the 3,200 easily Friday, won the 1,600 by 16 seconds. Madison's boys 4x100 and 4x200 relay teams were victorious in Division I competition. The 4x200 team of Joshua Hunt, Verono Hunt, Vernon Nunerly and Tracy Carter won in 1:27.96. The 4x100 team of Nunerly, Verono Hunt, Carter and Marcus Smith won in 42.40. Dallas Christian's Skye Dawson won a close boys Division II 100 in 10.43. Dawson beat Goodwin, Killeen Ellison's Prezel Hardy (10.61) and Arlington Seguin's Kameron Cowan (10.68). |
