Coppell remains perfect in District 6-5A Zak Hermans pitched a five-hit shutout and struck out 11 to lead Coppell's baseball team to a 7-0 victory over Flower Mound on Tuesday at Coppell. Hermans, who will play for Princeton next season, improved to 5-1. Coppell (14-6-1, 8-0) increased its lead in District 6-5A to three games over Flower Mound. Coppell is ranked No. 1 in SportsDay's 5A area rankings, and Flower Mound is No. 6. Coppell managed only five hits, but Tyler Hernandez was 1-for-2 with three RBIs. Coppell took a 1-0 lead with a run in the third inning, then broke the game open by scoring four runs in the fourth. Coppell added one run in the fifth and another in the sixth. Coppell has outscored its district opponents, 54-13.
BASEBALL Austin Blunt, Mesquite Poteet: Earned the win, struck out eight, was 3-for-3 with four RBIs and fell a triple short of hitting for the cycle as Poteet (16-2, 7-0 District 15-4A) beat Forney, 21-2. Josh Grady, Richardson: Was 4-for-4 with two doubles, a triple and five RBIs in a 15-4 win over Sunset. Josh Kent, Mesquite Horn: Drove in the winning run with a pinch-hit, double in the bottom of the seventh as Horn (11-8, 4-0 District 11-5A) beat North Mesquite, 6-5, after trailing 5-0 entering the sixth inning. Josh McClendon, Wylie: Pitched a one-hit shutout in a 7-0 win over Allen. Daniel Vasquez, Adamson: Was 3-for-4 with four RBIs and also earned the save in a 7-6 win over Carter.
SOFTBALL Jordan Bullard, Mesquite Horn: Pitched a no-hitter and struck out nine as Horn (20-7-2, 7-0 District 11-5A), the state's 16th-ranked 5A team, beat Tyler John Tyler, 13-0. Dayna Purl, Plano West: Threw a shutout and struck out seven as Plano West (16-8, 4-1) beat Wylie, 2-0, to stay tied for first in 8-5A. Kat Robason, Highland Park: Struck out 10 and pitched a one-hit shutout in a 4-0 win over Greenville. Brianna Rodriguez, Rowlett: Pitched a no-hitter, went 3-for-3 and scored three runs as Rowlett (20-4-2, 8-0 District 10-5A), the state's 15th-ranked 5A team, beat North Garland, 15-0. Ashley Rother, Flower Mound: Pitched a one-hit shutout as Flower Mound, the state's 17th-ranked 5A team, beat Coppell, 1-0.
College watch SOFTBALL Brittany Talley, Little Elm: The junior, who has committed to Arkansas, pitched a two-hitter and struck out 18 as Little Elm (25-3, 7-2 District 5-4A) beat The Colony, 4-0. Talley also doubled and homered.
Briefly ... Jon Faulkner homered and had two RBIs to lead Cedar Hill to a 9-8 win over South Grand Prairie, the state's 10th-ranked 5A baseball team. ... Travis Ballew (7-0) threw a two-hitter as Rockwall (18-2, 8-0 District 10-4A) beat Royse City, 5-0, in baseball.
Keller softball Last season, Keller tied for third in its district. This year, Keller (25-2-1, 10-0 District 5-5A) is ranked third in the state in 5A. Teri Lyles (19-0-1) pitched a one-hit shutout and Jordi Davis had two RBIs Tuesday as Keller extended its unbeaten streak to 21 games with a 6-0 win over Grapevine.
Jordan Stafford, Lovejoy softball Stafford pitched a six-inning perfect game to lead Lovejoy (11-10, 6-0 District 13-3A) to a 10-0 win over Nevada Community. She also went 2-for-3 with one RBI.
12 Hits in the last 15 at-bats for First Baptist baseball player Justin Byrd. He was 3-for-4 with three RBIs in Tuesday's 10-2 win over Parish Episcopal, and he has 17 RBIs in his last four games.
8 Runs scored in the top of the seventh by the Molina softball team as it rallied from a 6-2 deficit to beat Skyline, 10-6.
3 Runs scored by the Rowlett baseball team (15-5, 5-1 District 10-5A) with two outs in the top of the 10th in a 7-4 win over Sachse. |
