TOP STORIESArea championship soccer teams have plenty of talent returning04:12 AM CDT on Monday, April 13, 2009Dallas-area teams have won every girls UIL soccer title since 2007. Looking at the rosters of this year's champions, that streak could continue. Class 5A girls champion Coppell and 4A champ Richardson Pearce will return most of their starting lineups next year. That includes Pearce junior defender Maddie Harper, who was named MVP of the 4A title game, and Coppell junior forward Alyssa Diggs, who scored the winning goal in each of her team's victories at state. Pearce will need to replace senior goalkeeper Haley Newsom, who made several big saves in the title game, and senior midfielder Lauren Burks. But nine starters were sophomores or juniors. "We want to enjoy this," coach Oscar Borgarello said after Pearce won its first state title. "But we'll have very high expectations for next year." Coppell lost eight starters last season, but this season only three of its starters were seniors: forward Dominique Dinka, goalkeeper Cara Manning and midfielder Laura Sadler, the MVP of the championship game. Coach Chris Stricker expects the other starters to return, and he hopes this year's title will inspire next year's team. "Once you know what it's like to taste state," he said, "then you've set that precedent." The Plano boys soccer team set the precedent for winning state in 1991, when it won its first state title. This year's title, its sixth, came with the help of a roster loaded with seniors, including championship game MVP Ryan Brown. But Plano's tradition of winning should help inspire confidence in younger players who will step into bigger roles. |
