For Alkire, it showed fortitude. Alkire overcame gall bladder problems as she and McDade defeated Wichita Falls Rider's Abbie Lewis and Miranda D'Acosta, 3-6, 7-6 (7-4), 7-6 (8-6), in a three-hour-plus match at World of Tennis at Lakeway. Alkire left court in pain but cried tears of joy as she hugged family members. "She was so sick, but she is so strong. I felt really bad for her," McDade said. "But she pulled through, and I'm so proud of her." For McDade, the win meant vengeance. McDade, playing with Anna Stainback, lost to Lewis and D'Acosta in last year's semifinals. The Rider duo led, 6-4, in the third-set tiebreaker but could not put McDade and Alkire away. The win was the highlight of Highland Park's 4-0 performance Monday. Natalie Leitch and Abby Stainback won their girls doubles match, and Rob Oberman and Franklin Davis won in boys doubles. Ryan Collins and Taylor Schreimann were victorious in mixed doubles. Coppell's Kadi in final: Coppell senior Carson Kadi won twice Monday to advance to today's 5A boys singles final. The senior beat San Antonio Reagan's David Pace, 6-2, 6-2, in a first-round match, then beat Klein Collins' Andy Erickson, 6-2, 6-3, in the semifinals. Kadi, 40-1 this year, beat Erickson in the first round in 2007. He then fell to Laredo United's Bryan Welnetz. Kadi will get a rematch with Welnetz at 9 a.m. today for the championship. Unhappy about delays: Inclement weather forced play to be delayed more than four hours. Tournament officials decided to move the doubles semifinals to 8 a.m. today rather than play them Monday night. Plano West's Chris Bell and Sergio Antognelli hated hearing that after their 5A first-round victory over El Paso Coronado's Robert Lambeth and Erick De La Fuente – particularly after playing well in a 6-1, 6-2 rout. "It's a terrible thing because I hate waking up early," Bell said. Briefly: Richardson Pearce mixed doubles twins Jonny and Hannah Kelly beat Angleton's Josh Sebesta and Kathryn Head, 6-2, 6-0, to advance to today's 4A semifinals. ... Rockwall-Heath's Brady Bohrnstedt won his 4A first-round boys singles match in three sets against Fort Worth Boswell's Chris Copenhaver. Bohrnstedt lost to New Braunfels' Tyler Brown in the semifinals. |
