TOP STORIESPlano West duo takes boys' doubles tennis title11:51 PM CDT on Tuesday, May 6, 2008LAKEWAY, Texas – Plano West seniors Chris Bell and Sergio Antognelli lived by three words throughout the UIL state tennis tournament: "Do work, son!" Their motto fit their performance Tuesday. Antognelli and Bell cruised to a 6-2, 6-1, semifinal win against Houston Clear Lake's Robert Voss and Chris Hoffman, then took the 5A championship with no trouble, routing Klein Collins' Ben Chen and Andrew Sumrall, 6-1, 6-2. The duo gave Plano West its first boys doubles championship and first title since 2003, when Andy Mack won the 5A boys singles crown. "Since this is our last year, we wanted to go out with a bang," Bell said. "We've had a lot of fun with this." The 5A final was a rematch of a Region II tournament clash, which Chen and Sumrall won. Antognelli and Bell needed to win a playback to make state. "We thought we were the better team [at regionals], and we decided that we wanted to play like it [Tuesday]," Antognelli said. "We believed in ourselves, and this was our last chance to show it." HP girls doubles team beats New Braunfels: Natalie Leitch won a state doubles title in 2006. Abby Stainback won a state doubles title in '07. It was only fitting that the two Highland Park standouts play together, and they delivered in the 4A final with a 6-4, 7-5 victory against New Braunfels' Alexandra Adams and Samantha Adams. "We just came out so confident. We had really good drive," Stainback said. I think the match earlier [Tuesday morning's semifinal] got us going." Stainback, a sophomore, hasn't lost a match at state. She played with Taylor Schreimann last year. Leitch, a senior, played with Anna Stainback, Abby's older sister, when she won state two years ago. "This is my last year, and I can say I'm leaving with a nice goodbye," Leitch said. Coppell senior falls in singles final: Coppell senior Carson Kadi left the facility with a silver medal after falling to Laredo United's Bryan Welnetz, 7-6 (7-2), 6-0, in the 5A boys singles final. Welnetz did to Kadi what Kadi usually does to his opponents: he built momentum by ending long rallies with key winners. Welnetz controlled the second set after battling back from 6-5 down in the first. "I'd get in a rhythm, and I'd be in control of a point, and then he'd hit a winner. It was frustrating," said Kadi, who finished the year 40-2. "I'm disappointed because I wanted to win, but I did the best I could." Briefly: Highland Park's Rob Oberman and Franklin Davis (4A boys doubles), Irving North Hills' Aarthi Kasilingam (2A girls singles) and Argyle's Marty Bowman and Eric Katzen (3A mixed doubles) all won silver medals. ... Frisco Wakeland freshmen Aaron Chafee and Jordan Reed lost to Robinson's Tucker Mueck and Daniel Trayler in a 3A boys doubles semifinal Tuesday morning. ... Frisco Lovejoy freshman Price Smith lost in a 3A boys singles semifinal. |
