TOP STORIESBaseball roundup: Carroll rallies to win12:13 AM CDT on Friday, May 9, 2008SOUTHLAKE – Southlake Carroll erased a seven-run deficit to defeat Arlington Martin, 9-8, in eight innings in Game 1 of a Class 5A Region I best-of-3 area-round series Thursday. Carroll (15-17) trailed, 7-0, before scoring twice in the bottom of the fourth and once more in the fifth. Martin (29-4-1) scored a run in the sixth, but Carroll tied the score with a five-run rally in the bottom of the inning. Carroll earned the win when Shaun McPeters' suicide squeeze bunt with the bases loaded scored Tommy Avers. Avers was a pinch-runner for Will Watson, who started the inning with an opposite-field double. "We've got a good lineup, one through nine, and we can put together a big inning," Carroll coach Larry Hughes said. "The main thing was just trying to keep them grinding it out and keep trying." Avers advanced to third after an infield hit by Zack Bellinger, and Andrew LaCombe was intentionally walked to load the bases. McPeters then laid down his suicide squeeze, sending Avers in for the victory. "It was a great game. I just didn't want them to give up," Hughes said. Carroll broke Martin's 14-game winning streak. Martin's Jantzen Witte hit two home runs in the loss.
