TOP STORIESTrack and field notebook: Rowlett's Goodwin steps into intense spotlight08:31 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 14, 2008Rowlett's Marquise Goodwin is now a marquee attraction. During the Lancaster regional qualifiers meet in mid-April, the junior said that he had no scholarship offers. That was before he won three gold medals, a silver and a bronze and led his team to the team championship at the 5A state meet last weekend in Austin. Rowlett coach David Nanez said inquiries have poured in from Texas, Texas A&M, Texas Tech, Baylor, LSU and Kansas. "The last 48 hours has been like a circus," Nanez added. Goodwin is being swarmed with media attention like never before and, Nanez said, is handling it with grace. "He is very polite and says the right things to all those who interview him," he said. "I truly believe his answers to questions are truthful and genuine."
Charter school goes far with limited means Dallas Gateway, a fourth-year charter school that does not have a track, won the 1A 4x200 title in its first appearance at the UIL state meet. Sophomore Tyrail Dotson, junior Troy Richardson, sophomore Brandon Williams and sophomore LaDerrick Long won the race in 1:29.97. Gateway is building a campus with a track and football stadium that will open next school year. In the meantime, the athletes work with what's available. "We practice in the back of the school on grass," coach Tim Green said. "We go up on hills." But winning a state title despite the limited means points to a bright future, athletic director James Bevil said. "If we can run on that," he added, "we can run on anything."

The school has extended a scholarship offer, she said. "I already made my decision but I haven't signed with them yet because I'm still trying to get some stuff done," Jordan said.
Plano East junior goes distance to win high jump The stands had emptied out at Myers Stadium after the running events were complete, but there was still one more gold medal up for grabs. The 5A high jump continued for another 15 minutes until Plano East junior Toddrick Allen outlasted Fort Bend Austin senior Jeff Herron to win the title in his first appearance. "I knew the running events were over, but my event wasn't over, so I just did what I needed to do," Allen said. Allen cleared 6-10 on his first jump and Herron did it on his last attempt, making Allen the winner after neither could clear 6-11. |
