TOP STORIESWaxahachie takes opener from Highland Park, 7-412:03 AM CDT on Wednesday, May 21, 2008UNIVERSITY PARK – Waxahachie had too much power for Highland Park in Game 1 of a Class 4A Region II semifinal series at Scotland Yard. Too much power pitching by Colton Cain and too much power hitting, including a grand slam by Hestand Foster, led to a 7-4 win Tuesday. Cain racked up 12 strikeouts in six innings of work. With his fastball topping out at 91 mph on a radar gun, Cain gave up five hits and did not allow a run through four innings. Waxahachie and Highland Park are Nos. 5 and 6 in the state 4A rankings and finished 3-4 in the area rankings. Waxahachie (28-6) took a 2-0 lead in the third inning. Boomer Collins led off with a home run to center field, and Waxahachie got its second run on a bunt by Chris DeLeon. That set the stage for Foster's towering grand slam into the lights in left field in the fifth inning. Waxahachie tacked on another run on a Derek Junkin triple for a 7-0 lead. Waxahachie collected nine hits against three Highland Park pitchers. Drew Harrison was 3-for-4 with a double. Highland Park (34-7) responded with two runs in the bottom of the fifth. Cain hit two batters and walked another to load the bases. Highland Park scored its first run on a ground out, then Alex Flink ripped an RBI single up the middle. Highland Park drew closer in the sixth on a solo home run by Joey Hainsfurther and got another RBI single by Flink in the seventh. Game 2 of the best-of-3 series is 7:30 p.m. Friday at Waxahachie. A third game, if necessary, will be 2 p.m. Saturday at Coppell's Cowboy Field. |
