McKINNEY, SENIOR Notable: Johnston, 17, is ranked No. 8 in a class of about 400. She is a two-time member of the All-Region 25 choir. Johnston, who has been singing since the fourth grade, earned a First Division rating last year at the UIL State Solo and Ensemble. She also earned third place in McKinney's Got Talent. Sport: Soccer Other achievements: Johnston also serves on the Congressional Youth Advisory Council for U.S. Rep. Sam Johnson. College plans: Earned a soccer scholarship to Baylor. She plans to major in a pre-med track. She's interested in pursuing genetics or orthopedic surgery. Favorite thing about singing: "It's a medium of expression. It can serve any purpose you want. You can put any idea or opinion in your singing." Why did you stay with singing for so long? "It takes a lot for me to quit something. I like to keep busy. If I have time to do it, then I don't see any reason to give it up." Favorite singers or groups: Jack Johnson, Relient K, Josh Groban, Jason Castro Will you ever try out for American Idol? "I don't think so. They are getting to be a little harsh on that show." Any similarities between soccer and singing? "Yes. You have to be mentally tough to get in front of people and sing. It's the same thing in soccer or in any sport." |
