Plano, the No. 2 ranked Class 5A team in the state, was held to just 52 yards in the first half while DeSoto built a 20-7 lead. Defensive back Laron Kelly set up two Plano touchdowns with timely interceptions. Kelly's first pick at the DeSoto 22 led to Plano's only touchdown in the first half. The second interception set Plano up at the DeSoto 10 with 6:52 left in the game. Three plays later, quarterback Carson Meger hit Kris Lott on a fade route to give Plano a 28-20 lead with 5:22 remaining. Week 1
Plano scored on its first drive of the second half by pounding away with running back Rex Burkhead out of the I-formation. Burkhead, who finished with 115 yards, scored from seven yards out to pull Plano within 20-14. Plano then recovered a fumble at the DeSoto 31. Meger scored the go-ahead touchdown, giving Plano a 21-20 lead, on a fourth-and-1 sneak from seven yards out. DeSoto (1-1) came close to pulling an upset at Kimbrough Stadium with an impressive first half. DeSoto scored on the opening drive of the game, covering 76 yards in seven plays. Ryan Polite hit Sam Ajala from 10 yards out for the score. DeSoto then faked a kick for the extra point and Darius Terrell took the snap and ran it in for a two-point conversion. DeSoto later mounted an exhausting, 15-play scoring drive. The key play was a 24-yard completion from Polite to Terrell on third-and-11. That kept the drive alive for Polite to find Marcus Murphy for a 7-yard touchdown pass on fourth-and-goal. A missed extra point kept DeSoto's lead at 14-7. DeSoto's offense wore down Plano even more on its next drive. This time, DeSoto generated five first downs in nine plays, capped by a 13-yard touchdown scramble by Polite. DeSoto outgained Plano 285-52 on its way to a 20-7 halftime lead. DeSoto produced 14 first downs in the first half to Plano's two. |
