Do many people realize you are the son of longtime Plano girls basketball coach Lynn Meger?

Actually, at school, a lot of kids will come up to me and say, "Wait ... huh," and just make the connection. A lot of my friends I've had for years are just now realizing it.

Your mom has been coaching at Plano for 25 years. Did you grow up watching a lot of Plano football and basketball?

I've been going to those games since I was a little kid. I don't even know if I can remember the first game I went to. I've been living up at Plano [Senior High] since I was 1. I was up there all the time, especially when they got that new indoor facility. I was always up there playing with my friends.

Your mom can get pretty animated on the sidelines when she coaches. Are you like that, too?

She can get into the games. They've got some pretty intimidating freeze frames of her. I get into it, I'd say, if there's a bad call or something, but I probably hold my composure a little better.

Your dad, Dave, also coached high school golf. Do you view things like a coach?

You could say I got the coach gene. I'm more an assistant coach to my teammates.

Plano quarterbacks traditionally wear numbers in the 20s. What's your number?

I wear 28. On JV I was wearing No. 7. Last year, I got moved up from JV and they came to me and said all the tradition of 20s at quarterback and that was the only 20 [number] left. I'm fine with the tradition. There's tons of traditions in Plano. I actually like how we have simple jerseys and they're not all fancied up. But a number doesn't affect how you play.

You tore your ACL twice as a freshman and needed surgery both times. How tough was that?

I think it helps me when it comes to the mental side of football, how tough you have to be mentally. I'd been waiting my whole life to play football at Plano and then when it happened, I tore my ACL. I wasn't a very patient person before I got my ACL surgery, and now I'm pretty patient.
