TOP STORIESCelina's 45-game winning streak snapped12:59 AM CDT on Saturday, September 13, 2008CELINA –Julius Hurndon intercepted a pass at the Celina 5-yard line with 29 seconds left as Daingerfield (3-0) stunned Class 3A No. 2- ranked Celina, 28-20, on Friday night. The loss was the first at Bobcat Field in almost 10 years for Celina (2-1). The defeat also snapped a 45-game regular-season winning streak, and a 46-game nondistrict win streak that dated back to 1998. Celina trailed 25-7 at the half before mounting a second-half rally on touchdown runs by Austin Carey and Troy McCartney. The Celina defense held Daingerfield to 24 offensive yards after halftime. Celina received a chance to tie the game with 2:45 left when Taylor Parker recovered a fumble, and Celina drove to the Daingerfield 10 before Hurndon's game-saving pick. Hurndon also had two fumble recoveries for Daingerfield, including a 45-yard return on the first play of the second quarter that gave Daingerfield the lead for good. McCartney rushed for 157 yards on 23 carries -- both career-highs for the senior --and scored two touchdowns in place of leading rusher Charley Waldrep, who reaggravated a high ankle sprain last week but is expected to return in time for district play. Running back Jose Romero also left the game with a shoulder injury. Celina was hurt by four turnovers, and its passing game was out of sync, with four dropped passes that would've resulted in big plays. The game had been originally scheduled for Saturday at Royse City but was moved to Bobcat Field because of the threat of Hurricane Ike. Celina was unable to avenge a 2002 area-round playoff loss to Daingerfield that had ended its state-record winning streak at 68 games. |
