TOP STORIESFossil Ridge reels in thrilling victory12:25 AM CDT on Saturday, September 22, 2007FLOWER MOUND – Late in the fourth quarter, deep in his own territory with the Flower Mound crowd at its most deafening, Keller Fossil Ridge quarterback John Killion knew the pressure was on him to make a play. "We didn't want to punt deep in our territory and give them a chance," Killion said. "We ran a double comeback route, and we got a good bite." High Schools
Killion hit wide receiver Rico Minor on an 87-yard touchdown strike to seal Fossil Ridge's 23-10 victory over Flower Mound on Friday night at Jaguar Stadium. Leading, 16-10, with less than six minutes to play, Fossil Ridge faced a third-and-7 on its 13-yard-line. It was then that Killion, buying time by step up in the pocket, found Minor in the middle of the field, and the wide receiver took it the rest of the way. "He was running a sit route in the middle of the field," Killion said of Minor. "I just threw it to him, and he took it." Fossil Ridge coach Tony Baccarini chuckled when discussing the play after the game. "John stepped up in the pocket and read a secondary receiver," Baccarini said. "He put a great throw on him. He made a play, and Rico made a play." The defense, too, shined for Fossil Ridge, holding Flower Mound quarterback Brandon Colquitt to just 115 yards and forcing three turnovers. The defense put pressure on Colquitt all night, forcing quick throws and intercepting the junior twice. "Our defense played fast," Baccarini said. "They play aggressively, and they hit hard. They played great tonight." Tight end Chandler Koch scored Flower Mound's lone touchdown on a 5-yard run in the first quarter to put Flower Mound ahead, 7-0. Running back Tyler Pritchard added 98 yards for Flower Mound. After the game, with black beads from the Jaguar Stadium's artificial surface on his face, Killion didn't want to even think about what could have happened if he had missed Minor. "I'd probably just hate myself," Killion said with a smile. |
