TOP STORIES2-minute drill with Waxahachie's Boomer Collins12:27 AM CDT on Friday, September 28, 2007 Boomer Collins, Waxahachie QB/S Let's start with the obvious: How did you get the name Boomer? That was my dad's nickname in college. He gave it to me when I was born and it kind of stuck with me the rest of my life. Was it some sort of fraternity nickname, like "Flounder" in Animal House? He played football at the University of Indiana. He was a punter and that was what all of his teammates called him. I prefer going by that name than anything. Everybody kind of likes it. It's different. What's your real name? Thomas Joseph Collins III. So instead of "Boomer" you could be known as T.J., Trip, Trey... I could be a bunch of things. Speaking of which, you're a bunch of things for Waxahachie. You're a third baseman/ outfielder orally committed to Nebraska. In football, you're a full-time starter at both quarterback and free safety. I'm usually pretty tired after games, but our coaches get us into enough shape during the week that I'm ready for that on Fridays. What about Saturday mornings? Saturday mornings are hard to walk. Do you take or eat anything to increase your stamina for a big game, like tonight against Corsicana? I drink pickle juice to keep me hydrated. Starting about Wednesday, I start pounding pickle juice. I don't like pickles at all, but I'll drink anything to keep me hydrated. I eat Chick-fil-A before every game, the chicken nuggets. I go and buy a small jar of pickles before every game so I can drink it at halftime. Doesn't Cowboys tight end Jason Witten market a sports drink made with pickle juice? I saw some the other day. I'm driving right now to get some, as a matter of fact. Besides football and baseball, what else do you like to do? I like to hunt and fish. I shot an eight-point buck two years ago and it scored pretty high on the Boone and Crockett. The biggest fish I ever caught was a six-pound bass. I use jigs. I like spinners, too. Rat-L-Traps are good, too. |
