TOP STORIESDefensive struggle goes Skyline's way12:31 AM CDT on Friday, September 28, 2007Credit Skyline's victory Thursday night to its defense and special teams. Skyline recovered a fumble, blocked a punt, intercepted two passes and held Kimball to four first downs – all in the second half – in a 13-6 victory at Forester Stadium. The defense also set up both of Skyline's scores. High Schools
Skyline took a 6-0 lead on Troy Stoudermire's 1-yard run with 6:04 left in the first quarter. Kimball fumbled deep in its own territory, and Skyline's Rodney Williams recovered the ball to set up the plunge. Skyline's go-ahead touchdown came early in the fourth when Javiar Hall found Stoudermire on an 18-yard pass, breaking a 6-6 tie. The touchdown pass came after Kimball snapped the ball over the punter's head, and Skyline's Spencer Reeves made a tackle for a 28-yard loss. Offensively, both teams struggled in a game marred by penalties. Skyline (3-1) had 246 total yards but also had 11 penalties. Skyline missed on scoring opportunities in the red zone on three occasions. The team missed two field goals inside the 25-yard line and had a fumble travel out of the end zone for a touchback. The loss spoiled another stellar performance from Kimball's defense, which forced three turnovers and made Skyline turn the ball over on downs in the fourth quarter. Kimball (1-4), however, mustered only 73 total yards on offense and punted six times. Most of Kimball's yardage came on Darionne Jones' 61-yard touchdown run with 22 seconds left in the third quarter. Stoudermire – who lined up at four different positions Thursday – finished with 70 rushing yards and 67 passing yards, but his biggest play came as a defensive back. He intercepted a pass with less than two minutes remaining, ending Kimball's chance at a come-from-behind win. |
