COPPELL Leave it to a neighbor to spoil one of Southlake Carroll's most prized streaks.
Coppell 57, Southlake Carroll 53 (2 OT)
10-10-2008
With a near capacity crowd at Buddy Echols Field watching, Konner Joplin's 3-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Tollett in the second overtime gave Coppell a wild 57-53 victory, handing Southlake Carroll a Class 5A district defeat for the first time
The streak, which began in 2002, ended at 38 games.
Coppell (5-1, 1-0) took a 50-43 lead in the first overtime on Joplin's 8-yard pass to Tollett.
Carroll (4-1, 0-1) tied it on the fifth touchdown pass of the night by Kyle Padron, a 2-yarder to Josh Rake.
But on the first possession of the second overtime, Carroll stalled at the Coppell 10 and had to settle for a 27-yard field goal from Cade Foster.
Coppell drove for the winning score with Joplin hitting Tollett with a key 15-yard completion.
A mishandled snap prevented a 47-yard Carroll field goal attempt that could have won the game in regulation.
Carroll came into its first meeting with Coppell in three years ranked No. 3 in both the Associated Press' state poll and SportsDay's Class 5A area rankings,
Coppell, No. 17 in SportsDay, had lost its last four meeting with Carroll by the combined scored of 228-83.
Heroes for Coppell were Joplin, running back Evans Okotcha (121 rushing yards) defensive back Matt Koch (interception) and defender Jared Parham (tackle for a safety)
The insertion of junior quarterback Hayden Hawk in the second quarter helped Coppell overcome a terrible start.
Hawk caught Carroll in a blitz, hitting Okotcha with a quick dump pass that resulted in a 16-yard touchdown to cut the lead in half.
Okotcha scored again 23 seconds later on a 13 yard run following a fumble recovery byParham on the kickoff.
Carroll defender Brayden Burnett returned the favor with a 30-yard fumble return caused by a sack on Joplin in the third quarter.
