TOP STORIESPlano rolls on, remains unbeaten12:15 AM CDT on Saturday, October 11, 2008PLANO – Plano quarterback Carson Meger threw three touchdown passes, and running back Rex Burkhead ran for 202 yards and two scores as Plano remained undefeated with a 44-21 drubbing of Plano West on Friday night at Clark Stadium. Meger connected with wide receiver Robert Robinson for two scores and Holt Hoetger for one to lead the rout. The senior quarterback threw for 308 yards, but many of the yards came after the catch on swing and screen passes. "We want to get our talent out in space," Plano coach Jaydon McCullough said. "We want to spread the ball around. And with the kind of talent we have, some of the guys are going to want the ball more. But that's what's best for the team." Burkhead dominated both as a runner and receiver, gashing the porous Plano West defense for 267 total yards. His 11-yard touchdown scamper midway through the second quarter put Plano (7-0, 3-0) ahead for the first time, and his 12-yard score on an option pitch at the end of the third quarter sealed the game's blowout status. After Plano West quarterback Travis Wilson put the Wolves ahead briefly with a touchdown run in the first, Plano's defense stifled Plano West (3-4, 1-2) for the rest of the night. The Wildcats held Plano West to 115 yards on the ground, many of them after the game's fate had been sealed, and pestered Wilson consistently. "One of our objectives this week was to take away their quick passing game," McCullough said after the win. "I don't think that's any secret. We did a good job disguising ourselves tonight." |
