TOP STORIESDenton Ryan rolls past Denton Guyer, earns share of district title12:04 AM CST on Friday, November 6, 2009DENTON – Touchdowns on four straight drives, including three on passes from Scotty Young in a span of 5 ½ minutes of the third quarter, propelled Denton Ryan a 50-29 win Thursday night over Denton Guyer. Week 10
The win at C.H. Collins Complex gave Ryan, ranked No. 5 in SportsDay's Class 4A area poll, a share of the District 5-4A championship with Guyer. Lake Dallas could make it a three-way tie with a win tonight at The Colony. The loss was Guyer's first of the season. "It means a lot to us," Ryan coach Joey Florence said. "But more than anything else, it's just the playoffs. We wanted to have some momentum going into the playoffs; we wanted to have a good seed going into the playoffs." A 26-yard touchdown run by Guyer's Jaimaine Wilhite, plus a two-point conversion by Wilhite on a pass from J.W. Walsh, tied the score 29-29 with 4:18 remaining in the third quarter. But Ryan (9-1, 6-1) answered in less than a minute, with Young hitting Antonio Anderson on a 24-yard touchdown pass. After Guyer (9-1, 6-1) went three-and-out, Young hit Anderson for a touchdown on the following drive. Two costly Guyer penalties – for pass interference and unsportsmanlike conduct – had put the ball at Guyer's 17-yard line. Young was 21-of-35 for 289 yards and five touchdowns. "We needed some big plays," Young said. "And that's what we got, some big plays from some great players." Ryan will face Saginaw and Guyer will play Fort Worth Boswell in the first round of the Class 4A Division 1 playoffs. |
