TOP STORIESPlano West to make state volleyball tourney debut01:21 AM CST on Monday, November 12, 2007Plano West will makes its UIL state volleyball tournament debut by playing Austin Westlake, the nation's second-ranked team, in a Class 5A semifinal at 5 p.m. Friday at Texas State's Strahan Coliseum in San Marcos. Westlake (41-1) is ranked No. 2 nationally by prepvolleyball.com and No. 1 in the state by lonestarvolleyball.com. Plano West (34-8), the only area qualifier, is unranked in the national 100 and No. 13 in the state. Defending state champion Amarillo (44-1), ranked No. 3 nationally, plays Cy-Fair (37-2) in the other semifinal at 7 p.m. Friday. The final is scheduled for 7 p.m. Saturday. Plano West advanced to state by defeating District 9-5A rival Lake Highlands in Saturday's Region II-5A final in Huntsville. Westlake and Amarillo have handed each other their only losses. Plano West came close to qualifying last year, but lost to Allen in the regional final. "We had an amazing team last year," senior Shannon Hawari said. "I just can't believe that we got farther than that team did." The tournament begins Thursday with classes 2A and 4A. Classes 1A, 3A and 5A begin Friday. All finals are on Saturday. |
