TOP STORIESComeback saves Cedar Hill's season11:10 AM CST on Friday, November 14, 2008IRVING – Cedar Hill's season appeared to be on the verge of extinction many times Thursday night at Texas Stadium. But after the true left foot of Eduardo Camara delivered a 22-yard field goal in the third overtime, Cedar Hill players celebrated an unlikely 52-49 victory over Plano West in a Class 5A Division II Region I bi-district game. It took a minor miracle for Cedar Hill (10-1) just to get to the third overtime. Trailing by seven in the second overtime, Cedar Hill faced a fourth-and-24 at its 39. After rolling left, quarterback Driphus Jackson spotted Laquan Harper behind the Plano West secondary. Harper made a leaping grab and fell into the end zone to force an extra period. In the third overtime, a fourth-down sack of Plano West quarterback Travis Wilson by Tyler Washington put Cedar Hill in position to win with a field goal. Cedar Hill, down 28-0 early in the third quarter, scored 35 consecutive points for a 35-28 lead early in the fourth quarter. Plano West (5-6) made it 35-35 on a 7-yard touchdown run by quarterback Travis Wilson with 1:13 left. A blocked punt by Chance Hutcheson set up the tying score. Plano West had a chance to win in regulation after an interception by Xavier Johnson in the final minute, but a 30-yard field goal attempt missed wide left. Overshadowed was the duel of running backs. Plano West's Darrius Cohen, playing for the first time in four weeks because of an ankle injury, had 276 yards and four touchdowns. Ben Malena, the No. 5 Class 5A area rusher, had 231 yards and four touchdowns, including one receiving. Cedar Hill will advance to the area round for only the third time in school history. It will face the winner of Saturday's Colleyville Heritage-Southlake Carroll bi-district game. |
