TOP STORIESSouthlake Carroll crushes Colleyville Heritage, 55-711:05 PM CST on Saturday, November 14, 2009ARLINGTON – The venue was different, but the result was a familiar one as Southlake Carroll opened the playoffs with a dominating 55-7 victory over Colleyville Heritage in a Class 5A Division II playoff game Saturday at Cowboys Stadium. Carroll jumped out to a 28-0 first-quarter lead and intercepted five passes in its first game at the Cowboys' new stadium. Texas Stadium had been a home away from home this decade as Carroll piled up state championships, but Carroll seemed just as comfortable in the new place. Carroll (10-1) advanced to face Allen in a much-anticipated second-round game at 8 p.m. Saturday at Cowboys Stadium. "It felt great stepping out there and looking around," said Carroll defensive back Mitchell Osborne, who had the second interception. "A lot of people thought we were going to look past Colleyville Heritage to Allen, but that wasn't the case." Carroll coach Hal Wasson said he never worried about his team overlooking Heritage (7-4), a northeast Tarrant County rival. He said Carroll's defense had a great week of practice, and the players came out with a lot of energy. That translated into big plays and, ultimately, Carroll touchdowns. Heritage's second possession ended with an interception by Carroll's Justin Agnew, and Carroll needed only two plays to turn that into a touchdown on a 3-yard run by Tommy Avers. Soon thereafter, Osborne had his interception, and Carroll needed only two plays to score on another Avers run and take a 28-0 lead. "I was so happy with that," Carroll quarterback David Piland said. "Every time the defense forced a turnover, we rewarded them with a touchdown." Carroll's offense was efficient as usual. Piland completed 12 of 20 passes for 227 yards and two touchdowns before giving way to backup Kyle Williamson. Avers ran 14 times for 112 yards and three touchdowns. Carroll finished with 521 total yards and no turnovers. |
