TOP STORIESUsual recipe puts Euless Trinity in area round01:04 AM CST on Sunday, November 16, 2008IRVING – Euless Trinity followed its formula for playoff success in a 24-10 bi-district win over Flower Mound Marcus. Trinity mixed methodical offense with smothering defense and used nearly flawless execution as a catalyst. The result was too much for a Marcus team that came into Saturday's game at Texas Stadium with a 5-5 record after a bruising schedule. Trinity, No. 1 in the state Class 5A rankings, is 11-0 and will meet Plano in a rematch of last year's Division I state semifinal. Trinity won that game in double overtime as a prelude to the state title. Marcus was held to eight first downs and 116 total yards. After matching Trinity's opening scoring drive with a touchdown, Marcus struggled to move the ball the rest of the game. Sophomore running back Tevin Williams led Trinity with 100 yards on 20 carries and scored twice on short runs. Trinity gained 277 yards overall but drained the clock with 21 first downs. Playoffs
"There's so many upsets in the first round," Trinity coach Steve Lineweaver said. "You never really show it, but every coach is sweating out the first round." Trinity was able to relax a little when Williams scored at the end of a 13-play drive with 2:50 left in the first half, and Trinity took a 14-7 lead into halftime. After defensive back Jack Detvongsa intercepted a pass on the third play of the second half, Trinity converted the turnover into a 22-yard field goal by Isaac Arellano. Now trailing 17-7, Marcus tried to convert a fourth-and-3 from its 30. Sete Maile sacked Brad L'Huillier for a 7-yard loss. Three minutes later, Dontrayevous Robinson leaped into the end zone for a 24-7 Trinity lead. "We played our guts out," Marcus coach Bryan Erwin said. "The defense played great, the offense played good at times. We got out-manned in the end." Marcus kicked a field goal with 9:17 left, and Trinity ran out the clock with a 78-yard drive. |
