Bell on Friday at Irving Schools Stadium. But during the course of a 48-0 victory, Bowie played like hardened postseason veterans. Roddy Maginot scored three touchdowns – including the first two of the game – and Bowie never faced a serious challenge. Bowie's passing game was almost perfect (20-for-23), and the defense held Bell to 93 yards – only 4 rushing. Bowie (10-1), the District 8-5A co-champion, faces Flower Mound Marcus in the Class 5A Region I Division I area round next week. Bell (6-5), which tied for third in District 7-5A, has not won a playoff game since 1989. While Bowie's secondary kept Bell's passing game off-balance, it also wreaked havoc with the running game, as a sack by Javayle Fields thwarted Bell's game-opening drive. Fields' sack left Bell facing a fourth-and-22 at the Bowie 26, but a 43-yard field goal attempt fell short. Bowie never let Bell threaten again in the first half. Bowie scored again after Bowie's Kip Edwards intercepted a pass. Quarterback Christian Matthews threw a swing pass to Trae Hawkins, who then threw to a wide-open Maginot in the end zone for the game's first points. Both offenses scuffled the rest of the quarter. Bowie struck again with 7:02 left in the second quarter, again spurred on by some trickery courtesy of Hawkins. On fourth-and-3 from the Bell 40, Hawkins lined up in the backfield to punt, but instead he threw over the middle to Dexter Linton for a first down at the Bell 21. Two plays later, Maginot scored again, this time on a 7-yard run. |
