TOP STORIESJunior QB's long TD run sparks Arlington Bowie to 37-14 win over Lubbock Coronado10:56 PM CST on Saturday, December 1, 2007LUBBOCK – Arlington Bowie quarterback Christian Matthews receives a lot of attention for his passing arm. But the 6-3, 175-pound junior is pretty nifty with his feet, too. Matthews surpassed the 100-yard rushing mark for the first time this season, leading Bowie (12-1) to a 37-14 victory over Lubbock Coronado in the Class 5A Division I playoffs Saturday at Jones AT&T Stadium. Bowie's win sets up a Region I final against Euless Trinity at 4 p.m. Saturday at Texas Stadium. After Arlington Bowie's potent offense was held to one touchdown in the first half, coach Kenny Perry wanted more Matthews runs. On the second play of the third quarter, Matthews broke free on a 73-yard touchdown run, giving Bowie a 21-7 lead. The score started a run of 16 straight Bowie points that put the game away. "We just take what the defense gives us," said Matthews, who rushed for 131 yards on 12 carries. "When we get to the stage when we can run and pass, that's when we're lethal." In the first half, Matthews rushed for 19 yards – Bowie had 42. "Christian's touchdown run was the big play, no doubt," said Perry. "Defenses have been taking him away, but we stayed with it, and he broke one." Coronado (11-2), riding a nine-game winning streak, frustrated Bowie's defense with short passes mixed with scrambles by senior quarterback Austin Zouzalik. But Bowie defender Andre Robinson's interception of a Zouzalik sideline pass led to a 35-yard field goal by Eric Molina, which increased the lead to 24-7 with 4:40 left in the third quarter. Coronado muffed the ensuing kickoff, and Robinson recovered at the Coronado 14, setting up a 14-yard scoring run by Jonathan Johnson for a 30-7 lead. Zouzalik led his team on a 73-yard touchdown drive late in the third quarter to cut Coronado's deficit to 30-14, but Bowie's defense stiffened at midfield three minutes into the fourth quarter to end Coronado's longest playoff run in its 42 years of existence. Bowie's 14-7 halftime lead came courtesy of a 100-yard kickoff return by Jordan Donnell, a return Perry put in earlier in the week. The score broke a 7-7 tie. Bowie took a 7-0 lead in the final seconds of the first quarter on a 29-yard touchdown pass from Matthews to Roddy Maginot. Coronado tied the score on its next possession, going 76 yards in 10 plays. Bowie was penalized 29 yards on the drive, including a 14-yard pass-interference penalty that kept Coronado's drive alive. |
