The team came out to do layup drills – without a basketball. Other than that, everything went perfect for DeSoto, ranked No. 1 in the state coaches poll. DeSoto (22-0) opened the game with an 18-4 run and never trailed. Boys basketball tournaments Wildcat Classic: Heritage wins Girls basketball tournaments "We wanted to play tough defense again, and we wanted to press them, try to force them into some turnovers, and we wanted to get the ball inside," DeSoto coach Larry Goad said. Lancaster, which ended Lincoln's four-year reign as champion, couldn't match DeSoto's size, or Texas A&M signee Sydney Carter. Carter scored 13 of her 17 points in the first half, and DeSoto's posts – Vanessa Obafemi, Keandra Goodson and Jasmine Johnson – combined for 10 points in the paint before half. When asked what aspect of the game was affected by DeSoto's size, Lancaster coach Beverly Lockett said: "All of it. I don't think we were outhustled, but I think we were outsized." Lancaster has only one player on its roster taller than 5-9; DeSoto started three players 5-10 or taller. "We knew that they were a small and quick team," Goodson said. "So our strategy was to pound it in." Lancaster (16-6) switched several players on Carter, to no avail. Carter, the tournament's MVP, went 7 for 13, making two 3-pointers, and added seven rebounds. "I expect them to switch it up," Carter said. "But it really doesn't matter. If they were going to do the same thing to somebody else, we're smart enough to play the matchups." Goodson finished with 13 points and nine rebounds. Obafemi had 11 points and eight rebounds. Goad said the win completed one of his team's goals, winning all three tournaments it played. DeSoto also won the Pasadena McDonald's Invitational and the DeSoto Rotary Classic. All-tournament selection Jericka Jenkins led Lancaster with 14 points, 11 in the fourth quarter. Skyline stifles SOC for third: Skyline scored the game's first 11 points and cruised in the third-place game, beating South Oak Cliff, 49-29. Skyline (16-8) held South Oak Cliff without a field goal until 1:25 remained in the first quarter. "We noticed ... that we were a little sluggish, unmotivated," Skyline coach Cassandra McCurdy said. "Once we stepped it up defensively, we were OK." Kimberly Haynes, selected to the all-tournament team, led Skyline with 12 points. Ashley Williams, also an all-tournament selection, had 12 points and six rebounds for South Oak Cliff. Briefly: Hebron outscored Kimball by 19 points combined over the second and third quarters, taking the consolation game, 47-38. Chanelle Baker led Hebron with 15 points.
