TOP STORIESWhataburger: North Crowley finally breaks through with victoryMVP's 22 points secure 72-60 win in Whataburger final02:41 AM CST on Sunday, December 30, 2007HALTOM CITY – Fourth time proved to be the charm for North Crowley. After losing the last three Whataburger finals, North Crowley finally won it after beating Monroe Carroll from Louisiana, 72-60, in a heated and physical battle. And this time, Crowley guard Willie Warren didn't have to do it by himself like a year ago, when he scored 41 in the finals. Although he won the tournament's MVP, he tied his lowest score in the tournament with 22. But the rest of the Crowley team showed this is more than just one-man star team. Guard Tony McGilveary, who scored 17 points, made a 3-pointer and another basket that extended North Crowley's lead to eight points with less than four minutes to play. More important, the team did a great defensive job in limiting Carroll's twin towers, forwards Terrance Henry (6-9) and Brandon Wilson (6-6). Henry scored 16 of its 28 points in the first half, while Wilson only had six of 18 points in the fourth quarter. Crowley had lost the last three Whataburger finals, falling to Plano West last year, Fort Worth Dunbar in 2005 and Irving in 2004. These two teams already knew each other after playing in another tournament final earlier this month. That time, North Crowley won 69-62 led by Warren's 28 points, although Henry finished with 37 for Monroe. ■ Fort Worth Dunbar takes third: Guard Darious Jones led Fort Worth Dunbar to a third-place finish after scoring 33 points in the 108-97 win over Plano West in the Whataburger tournament. Jones, who had 22 points in the first half, had help from his teammate Jason Smith, who finished with 25. But the key was getting stops in the fourth quarter. Up by just five, Dunbar went into a 13-5 run to extend its lead by 10 because of a couple of steals from guard Joseph Brumfield. Forward Jackson Jeffcoat had 29 points and center Mike Groselle scored 24 for Plano West. ■ Hebron tops Fort Worth Southwest: Trey Anderson's 39 points gave Hebron (15-5) the white division's Whataburger championship with a 99-96 overtime win over Fort Worth Southwest (15-4). Southwest had an eight-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. Anderson then scored seven points in an 11-2 Hebron run to take its first lead in the second half with 2:25 left in the game. Anderson scored 21 points in the first half, keeping his team in the game. The 6-4 senior guard was named the tournament's MVP after averaging 23.5 points in four games. ■ Redfearn leads Ponder: Blue division's MVP Calvin Redfearn scored 21 points to lead Ponder (20-2) to 48-44 win over Fort Worth Nolan (13-5) in the tournament's championship game. The senior guard made 7-of-9 shots from the field, including three 3-pointers in the second half. But his teammate Joel Garza, who finished with seven points, helped him out at the end. Garza hit two free throws with 32.8 seconds remaining to give the second-ranked Class 2A team in the state a 46-44 lead. Then a steal from senior forward Nathan McPherson set up a Garza's lay up that clinched the win. Special contributors Rob Harman and Jeff Owens contributed to this report. |
