TOP STORIESArlington Seguin girls responds to changeTeam bounces back strongly from loss after tweaking lineup01:11 AM CST on Monday, December 31, 2007On the first day of the Mansfield Rotary tournament, Arlington Seguin reached a crossroads. Seguin had just experienced an embarrassing 63-47, first-round loss to Flower Mound Marcus. Coach Courtney Phillips called a meeting and announced a lineup change that would transform the team for the rest of the tournament. Seguin rattled off four consecutive victories and won the Mansfield Rotary consolation championship by downing Cedar Hill, ranked No. 14 in 5A in the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches state poll, 46-41, Saturday night. Seguin (18-7), along with Lancaster (17-5) and Mesquite Horn (15-7), are among the teams whose stock improved in the aftermath of the holiday tournaments last weekend. Adding senior forward Briana Johnson to the lineup gave Seguin a three-post setup. Phillips' move was backed unanimously by Seguin's four captains, juniors Recca Trice, Alex Adekunle, Amber Doolittle and Krista Summerville. "It was kind of unorthodox, but I said I was going to take a chance," Phillips said. "Briana has earned it. She is consistent for us when she comes off the bench." Johnson picked up quickly on her new role, like having the ball on inbounds plays, and averaged 8.5 points in the final four games for Seguin, ranked No. 10 (4A) in the TABC poll. Phillips said she plans to stick with the new lineup for as long as it works. Another team emerging from the weekend in blazing fashion was Lancaster, which defeated Lincoln, the five-time Dallas ISD Coca Cola tournament champion, on Thursday en route to a runner-up finish. Lancaster started the season strong but was just 2-2 in 15-4A. Making it to the final and faring well against unbeaten DeSoto, ranked No. 17 in the nation by USA Today, may have renewed Lancaster's confidence. "They are such a scrappy team and they have improved so much," said Phillips, whose Seguin team edged Lancaster, 34-31, on Dec. 14. Also on the rise is Mesquite Horn, which won the consolation championship at the Duncanville Sandra Meadows Classic. Although Horn was soundly defeated by tournament champion Houston Bellaire (No. 5 in the USA Today poll) in the first round, it never looked back and heads into 12-5A play on a roll. Horn faces North Mesquite, which beat it twice last season, Wednesday. "We have to make sure we're not conceited, but convinced – convinced that we can go in and win the district," Horn coach Christina Bradford said. |
