TOP STORIESGarland football team enjoying playing, eating together03:32 PM CDT on Friday, October 3, 2008 Video Ted Madden reports Oct. 2, 2008 At the heart of the Garland football team is a group of guys who have been winning for a long time. "We grew up together, we were friends," says center Matt Moffatt. "We played at Hillside, then we moved to Austin Academy and from then until the beginning of high school we never lost a game." Those players are now seniors and they have helped the Owls jump out to a 5-0 start. It comes after the team went 3-7 a year ago. "We first started seeing them play, a bunch of them, in 7th grade over at Austin," says Garland head coach Jeff Jordan. "They're a real core part of this team. It's a good bunch of kids, they're hard working, they do what you ask them to do." What also sets this group apart is that they eat real well. "We got 38 New York strips," says Moffatt's dad, Todd. Every week, the night before the game, the Moffatts invite players to their home for dinner. It began with just the offensive line and just kept growing. "I really think it sets off the mood for the game," says safety Steven Baker. "We try to be relaxed and ready for the game, not uptight, and I think this loosens everyone up so it really plays a big part on how we perform on Fridays." The importance of team chemistry is hard to quantify, but if nothing else, it's just a lot more fun to play when your teammates are also your best friends. It leads to moments like these during games. "There's so many times where I'm lining up and I look next to me and it's either Lavar or Tevin back here and he just like smiles at me," says Baker. "We just have that kind of thing going on and we've had it since 5th grade." Says linebacker Lavar Hart, "Like on punt he's the person to protect, I'm the left up back and he'll be calling and I'll look back and be like, 'what's up?' I'm just very talkative on the field, I'm comfy like that." The heart of this football team eats well. Maybe the key to a happy heart is a full stomach. |
