TOP STORIESMansfield savors long-coming playoff win02:35 PM CST on Friday, November 21, 2008
The Mansfield football team won a playoff game for the first time in the school's history last weekend. And this isn't some brand-new school. Mansfield High School has been around for a while. "A long time, a long time," said running back Stepfan Taylor. "I'm not sure, my mom was here "It's the first time in the history they've won a playoff game," said head coach Jeff Hulme, "and I don't know how long Mansfield has been around, but it's been around a while." At least since 1940 and probably before then, although no one at Mansfield seems to know for sure. But everyone knew that the win over Abilene was, even Hulme who is in his first year as head coach. "I feel so happy for the administration that's been here for a while, and the AD, coach Weems, superintendent is retiring this year, he's been here a long time, and I'm real happy for them to see Mansfield football going like they are." This win meant so much to so many different people. For example, Taylor's mom went to Mansfield and the first time her alma mater gets a win, her son scores two touchdowns. Paul Melton / WFAA-TV Mansfield won the first playoff game in school history last weekend. "She was real excited, proud of the me, proud of the school, proud of the team," Taylor said. "Everybody's just proud of everybody." "My English teacher, she was telling us she heard it on the radio and stuff," said cornerback Jordan Finch. "She was congratulating us." The Tigers hope this playoff run continues well into December, but they already know regardless of what happens from here, they will always be remembered. "Whatever happens the rest of the year, they'll be able to talk this away with them," Hulme said. "These guys are going to be a part of history around Mansfield for a long, long time." |
