Baseball NewsBaseball playoffs roundup11:40 PM CDT on Friday, June 5, 2009ABILENE – Sometimes the baseball gods allow for a chance at redemption. Fort Worth Arlington Heights senior outfielder Mitchell Lichtie seized the opportunity and helped send the Yellow Jackets to next week's UIL Class 4A state tournament with an 8-4 victory against Wichita Falls Rider on Friday. The win capped a two-game sweep for Heights (29-7) at McMurry University's Lee Driggers Field. Lichtie was facing the possibility of being the game's fall guy after he dropped a fly ball in right field that allowed Rider (24-16) to take a 4-3 lead into the seventh inning. However, Lichtie smashed a two-run double to give Heights the lead for good in the top of the seventh. "Making a clutch error, there's nothing worse in baseball," Lichtie said. "We had the game sealed and I almost screwed it up. Then I got the chance to redeem myself. I was just trying to hit a ball deep enough to score the runner from third, and I ended up getting a two-RBI double and it's a great feeling." The Yellow Jackets scored five runs in the final at-bat to come back for the second time in the game. Blue Ridge 5, Windthorst 3: In Corinth, Shane Williams struck out 11 and drove in three runs with a pair of singles as Blue Ridge (27-5) beat Windthorst 5-3 to tie their best-of-3 Class A Region II final series, 1-1. Williams threw 148 pitches and had to overcome a late rally by Windthorst (31-8). With two out, Zach Hise doubled deep to left center and Cole Hemmi walked. But Williams got Joe Hoegger to pop out to end the game. |
